Artist's Description
Black and white colobus monkeys, native to Africa, are the only species of monkey without thumbs. The word colobus comes from a Greek word which means mutilated and is so named because its thumb appears to be a stump.
Adults weigh approximately 30 pounds and measure about 18-28 inches in length, not including their 20-40 inch tail. They can live 20 years in the wild and 29 years in captivity. Colobus monkeys sport a long black fur coat with a white strip running down their backs to tails. Bushy tails often exceed their length.
They range in Central Africa from Cameroon to Ethiopia and Tanzania in tropical forests along river banks. Their diet consists of leaves, buds, seeds, and occasionally fruit. Currently they are threatened because of deforestation and loss of habitat. Black and white colobus monkeys communicate vocally to their tribe to mark territory and also to alert members to danger.
